Buying seafood directly from the boat in Queenscliff Harbour is the kind of experience that feels properly coastal. Mi Shells Seafood operates from the Rachel Maree, moored at 1 Harbour Street, and the ritual of walking down to the dock to see what the day's catch brought in is worth the drive from Barwon Heads. If you're lucky, you might spot a manta ray gliding underneath the boat.

The selection is seasonal and depends on what the local boats have caught. Flathead, prawns, flake, oysters, Tasmanian salmon, scallops, mussels. The oysters are consistently described as some of the best in the area and sold straight off the deck. Ice and containers are available for transport, so you can get your catch back to the house in good shape.

Open Thursday to Sunday from 8:30am until 5pm or sold out, whichever comes first. Get there early on weekends. It's entirely worth the 25-minute drive to Queenscliff.
