Mortadeli
Mortadeli in Torquay started as Jake Cassar's lockdown project in 2021 and has become a mainstay on Gilbert Street. It's a Mediterranean deli and sandwich shop that does the fundamentals well. The sandwiches are the draw. Quality bread stacked generously with imported Italian and Maltese ingredients. The Continental Deli Sub layers mortadella, ham, sopressa and 'nduja with provolone. The Hobz-Biz-Zjet honours Cassar's Maltese heritage with tuna, olives, pickled red onion and kunserva.
Beyond sandwiches, the deli stocks Italian and Maltese products worth taking home. Anchovies, cured meats, pasta, sweet treats, and pantry staples you'll be glad you picked up. Coffee is great. They also pour negroni sbagliato on tap, which is reason enough to visit. Walk-ins only. Queues form quickly in peak periods after 11am, so arrive early.
