Barwon Heads Golf Club
The Barwon Heads Golf Club is literally at the end of the street from Little George. You can walk there in a couple of minutes, which is either a wonderful convenience or a dangerous temptation depending on how you look at it.
It is one of Australia's top-rated public access links courses and has been here since the 1920s. The layout is short and deceptively simple on the scorecard, but the exposed, wind-swept greens and firm, bouncy fairways make it a proper test. It is the kind of course where you need to think your way around rather than overpower it. If you have played links golf before, you will love it. If you haven't, this is a great place to start.
The heritage-listed clubhouse is something else. Listed by Heritage Victoria and the National Trust, it has the feel of a traditional country club with open balconies in summer and open fires in winter. There is a dress code, so check the website before you go. Green fee play is available on most weekdays and sometimes after competition times, but availability is limited during peak periods and summer holidays. Book ahead through the club.
If you are not up for a full round or you have kids with you, there is also a par-3 course that is a fun way to spend an hour. Again, book through the club.
